Thanks for taking the time to chat with me.

I'm sharing the feedback internally, but for future folks there were multiple issues.

The theme was built on tweaks to the standard UI, and was moving from pre 1.62 to post 1.62. Due to the massive changes in the default theme, this was problematic. The way the tailwind CSS is set up and built, it's more difficult to override the default styles wholesale now. Additionally, it is hard to create CSS selectors to target just certain elements.

@elliotdickison please keep me honest and let me know if I missed something.

FYI, this was fixed in 1.60.0, per the release notes.

In version 1.59.0 the password is now optional when creating or updating a user.

When returning from a third-party login, a user may be prompted to complete registration by entering a password when self-service is enabled and is configured to require a password.

This was unintended and has been corrected.

Personally cannot help you much since I have not deployed my monorepo on a server to see how FusionAuth behaves 😓 but I think it would be easier for others to assist you and understand it if you could share a reproducible repo or something of that sort.

Performance issues when retrieving applications

@yuriy-barvenko Ok, I'm in the same boat, but I think it is most likely the database back-end. Reason being, I migrated our database from the docker instance to a stand alone instance of PostgreSQL and I immediately noticed some performance degradation.

I'm running version 1.55.1 of FusionAuth and PostgreSQL version 14. There are documented performance improvements in both FusionAuth and PostgreSQL. I'll be updating my version of PostgreSQL and will report back.

Thanks for confirming. That lines up with what I’m seeing as well. We are indeed running MariaDB, and it looks like the JSON operator (->>) used in that query isn’t supported the same way in MariaDB, which would explain the syntax error.

We haven’t tested this yet on a supported database, but based on the linked issue and your comment, it does appear to be a MariaDB compatibility problem rather than a misconfiguration on our side. We’ll plan to test against a supported version of MySQL and/or PostgreSQL to confirm.

Appreciate you pointing us to the GitHub issue — that helps clarify things a lot.

Regarding your second point, really appreciate that (and the feature suggestions/bug reports you make!). We discuss features and pricing pretty regularly, and I'll surface this comment next time we do so.

The suggestions you gave are not very atomic. We have many users with spotty network connections, so we're trying to stick here with 1 API call for registrations.

I hear you. I think we already have some open issues about this, but if you'd like to file an issue outlining your preferred workflow, that'd be great.

@jacksontrevan - Let me start of by saying I am not very familiar with React applications. However, thinking about typical application flow, What would happen if the user was already logged in? Can't you get the login screen by just directing them to a secured page vs a "landing page"?

I guess I'm struggling to understand how FusionAuth internally saves the user data. Is this unstructured (e.g. JSON) inside the relational database?

You can examine the database schema FusionAuth uses here: https://fusionauth.io/docs/v1/tech/installation-guide/fusionauth-app#advanced-installation

I guess I can't give this more structure, e.g. defining data types, and so on?

The structure for the .data fields is implicit. This means that you can define the schema by creating a value. So if I set user.data.isPremium to true, then ES will understand that user.data.isPremium is of type boolean.

A couple of notes:

if you change the datatype across users, ES will get confused. Here's docs on how to deal with that: https://fusionauth.io/docs/v1/tech/admin-guide/troubleshooting#mapperparsingexception there's an open issue for allowing schema enforcement. Please upvote it or add other feedback using the PATCH method for arrays in the user.data field is a bit fragile. Here's docs on how to choose this method correctly: https://fusionauth.io/docs/v1/tech/apis/#the-patch-http-method

I guess there's also no "direct" access to the user data via an API? At least I didn't find anything.

You can update, patch or remove values from the user.data field using the normal user APIs. Or did I misunderstand your question?

ElasticSearch reindex doesn't reindex all documents

I'd be interested to see if the same issue occurs on the latest version of FusionAuth. There's 4-5 mentions of Elasticsearch in the release notes between 1.34.0 and 1.45.3, but none of them appear to address what you are seeing.

As mentioned above, also searching directly via id for example fails.

Sorry, I missed that. Are you saying when you search using the ids method (described here under the heading Search for Users by Id) it doesn't find these users? Because that search should go directly to the database and not through ES at all.

It's all a bit suboptimal.

Off topic, but please consider adding your voice to this issue which might help with your schema changes.

Login when app is hosted

@hershellasagna Other than server error, I got it resolved. I'm now able to login without issues. In the end it was my on-line server set-up. I thought my SSL certificate was set-up but it wasn't. Once it was, it starting working. Thanks again for replying, it definitely got me going in the right direction!!

But please allow me to reiterate once more, as I get the feeling the issue is now downplayed a bit to being a developer experience-issue.

We want a centralized / hosted authentication-solution, that we don't have to maintain ourselves. So… We have a hosted FA-instance and try to use the hosted login and registration views. There is an external API, though, that we Ping using a webhook for authorization purposes. This checks if application-access for a given user is still up to date with our own administration. If not the webhook returns a non-200 response and we update FA using an API-call accordingly. The webhook works very nice, and will be even better as soon as we get to customize its error message, which, I believe is already on your development-calendar (https://github.com/FusionAuth/fusionauth-issues/issues/1725) When the webhook fails we get a nice error message in the hosted interface that we can customize even. All is well. There's one exception to this, that is when the webhook fails after entering the MFA-challenge. Then we, all of a sudden don't get the webhook-error message, that we have customized, but an error message the MFA-challenge is incorrect. Which it is not. And which confuses our users, as they try another OTP-token, or even worse: another SMS, but it keeps failing. The token is not wrong. The webhook is failing. Everywhere the interface reports this correctly, except for this one, crucial, place: the entering of the MFA-challenge.

I see no way to customize this behavior, as a developer. This is not a developer experience issue, I feel, this is a bug.

Why are cloud upgrades so slow?

Thanks for your question and I really appreciate the other feedback you've given us (on GitHub and here).

While I'm not going to go into the details of the cloud upgrade process, we don't just swap out the installation; there's some other things that happen to ensure upgrades are robust.

We've outlined the downtime expectations here so that it's transparent for everyone and they can choose options that work for them.

I'd also point out that you control the upgrade timing and if you upgrade every single major release (we average about 10/year) that is approximately 50 minutes of downtime, which is 99.99% uptime (that's a ball park, of course, assuming no other downtime and no major database changes that make the upgrade longer).

Finally, I'll pass on your feedback to the engineering team.
